Description: A small to medium-sized fish. Body elongate, almost cylindrical; large eyes and a pointed snout. Upper jaw very protrusible. Dorsal fin continuous, composed of spines and soft rays; notched before the soft-rayed portion. Caudal fin forked. Lateral line single, continuous and smoothly curved. Brownish or reddish dorsally; silvery below; caudal fin reddish yellow; pelvic fins reddish.
Global Distribution: Central Eastern Atlantic: Portugal, Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and the Mediterranean, south to Mauritania.
