Description: Body moderately elongate and compressed. Lower jaw projecting slightly beyond upper. Mouth with fang-like teeth. Two dorsal fins, first one very long; second shorter, similar to anal fin. Second dorsal fin and anal fin with finlets. Pectoral fins short. Pelvic fins reduced to a single spine in juveniles and completely absent in adults. Single lateral line, dorsolateral anteriorly, then dropping abruptly and becoming midlateral and horizontal for the rest of its length. Colour is grayish to brown; the first dorsal fin much darker; second dorsal, anal and caudal fins yellow.
