Description: A medium-sized fish; robust, oval, laterally compressed. Pointed snout; large mouth with a single row of strong, protuberant canines. Large scales, including on the head and base of dorsal and anal fins. A single, long-based dorsal fin, with spines and soft rays; robust pectoral fins. Females are pink or orange with a yellow stripe on the sides, and males are dark red, with greenish-blue areas on the snout and dorsal area. Both sexes present a dark blue spot in the first rays of the dorsal fin.
Global Distribution: Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde.
