Description: A small to medium-sized grouper. Body elongate. Has a single continous dorsal fin, composed of spines followed by soft rays. The caudal fin is straight or with a shallow notch at the tip. Brownish, with four or five large dark squares on its sides, which alternate with smaller dark vertical bars. Vertical fins are dark with bright blue dots; pelvic fins are dark; the distal part of the anal fin and corners of the caudal fin are black.
