Description: Body elongate and cylindrical. Large head, with a long, pointed snout and elongate jaws. Mouth long, with prognatic lower jaw, with strong canine-like teeth. Two dorsal fins, widely separated; the first one above the pelvic fins; the second above the anal fins. Caudal fin deeply forked. Body covered in small scales. The dorsal part of the body is bluish or greenish grey, with numerous dark bands; the upper part of the head is black; the belly is silvery white.
Global Distribution: Eastern Central Atlantic: Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands. Also reported from Lebanon in the eastern Mediterranean.
