Description: Body extremely elongate and compressed. Head profile smooth, gently rising from tip of snout to the origin of the dorsal fin. Dorsal fin long, partially divided by a shallow notch. Pelvic fins present but very small, composed of a spine and a rudimentary soft ray. Small forked caudal fin. Body silvery, jaws and opercle blackish. The inside of the mouth and gill cavities are black.
Global Distribution: Western Atlantic: off Canada, Bermuda, USA; Mid Atlantic Ridge; Eastern Atlantic: Norway, mainland Portugal, Madeira, and Canary Islands.
