Description: A medium-sized deepwater shark, with a moderately long snout. and stocky body. Dorsal fins with inconspicuous spines buried in the fins or with the tips protruding slightly. Large, mostly smooth lateral trunk denticles. Pectoral fins moderately large, with broadly rounded free rear tips. No anal fin. Caudal fin with a strong subterminal notch. Uniformly dark brown or black in colour.
Global Distribution: Wide ranging but patchy distribution in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. In the Eastern Atlantic it is known from the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Senegal and South Africa.
