Reproduction: In Portugal, spawning takes place in the spring, whereas in Morocco it seems to occur in the summer.

ECOLOGICAL FEATURES
Depth range: SeaLifeBase 274 - 1850 m, common between 400 to 900 m.
Habitat: Benthic. Larger individuals are found in deeper waters.
Feeding habits: Feeds on crustaceans and small fish.

FISHERIES
Commercial interest: Highly valued commercial species, for example in the Mediterranean and in Brazil. Not common enough in Madeira to support commercial exploitation.
