Description: A small pelagic fish, with the body somewhat elongate and not very compressed laterally. Blue/green on the dorsal side, flanks silvery, with a faint golden lateral line. Has a faint black spot posterior to the gill opening, and another black spot at the origin of the dorsal fin. Presents two fleshy outgrowths on the hind margin of the gill opening. Caudal fin dark grey with almost black tips.
Global Distribution: Eastern Central Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

Reproduction: Breeds during the summer (July-September).
Maturity: 13.4 cm; range 11-19.5 cm.
Behavioural ecology: Forms schools in coastal waters. Sometimes they school together with sardines (Sardina pilchardus) and chub mackerel (Scomber colias).
Population structure & migrations: Juveniles and adults show clear north-south migrations in the Gabon-Congo-Angola sector of their range and also in the Sierra Leone-Mauritania sector. The movements are correlated with the seasonal upwelling.
