Description: Benthic fish, with a dorsoventrally compressed body and disproportionately large head, with numerous spines and ridges. Mouth very large and wide, with numerous sharp teeth; the lower jaw projecting. Bifid esca (fleshy appendage) at the end of first dorsal spine. Skin thin and loose, without scales, often with fleshy flaps. Uniformly brown; lighter on the ventral surface.
Global Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: south-western Barents Sea to Mauritania, including the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
