Description: A deep-water fish with peculiar anatomical features. The female is larger, and has a very long illicium which serves as a sort of fishing rod to attract prey. The skin is spinulose. Males are much smaller but not parasitic.
Global Distribution: Circumglobal in tropical and temperate waters. Absent from the Mediterranean.
