Description: A medium-sized deep-water fish. Body fairly elongate and compressed, with large head and large eyes. Head without scales. Opercle voluminous. Single dorsal and anal fins placed far back in the body, opposite each other. No spinal fin rays. Dark purple or brown; juveniles with an unpigmented strip along the dorsal and anal fin bases.
Global Distribution: Eastern Atlantic and Western Mediterranean.
