Description: A large carnivorous fish. Body elongate, moderately shallow, and slightly compressed, with upper profile more convex than lower. Upper jaw broad posteriorly. Colour bluish grey or olivaceous above, sides and belly silvery white. Usually with a dark band through eye to first dorsal fin origin. Juveniles present 5 dark bands which disappear with age.

ECOLOGICAL FEATURES

Habitat: Benthopelagic, reef-associated. Small juveniles associate with floating plants or debris in oceanic and offshore waters. Adults found in deep seaward reefs; occasionally entering coastal bays. Mainly on abrupt rocky bottoms.
Feeding habits: Feeds primarily on fishes; also on invertebrates.
